Are single-frequency radio systems reliable?

[cmsmasters_row][cmsmasters_column data_width=”1/1″][cmsmasters_text]

Radio-based systems emerged primarily due to the need to open the alarm market to mass consumption, as they allow for a considerable reduction in installation costs, eliminating one of the most significant expenses of any installation: wiring.

Operating principle

Single-frequency radio systems work as follows:

The connection between the system’s management unit and any of the associated detectors is established via a radio frequency signal, which can be either 433 MHz or 868 MHz, depending on the system’s age. In other words, there is no physical connection between the devices; the communication is wireless. This makes these systems vulnerable to frequency jammers, devices that prevent the signal sent by a detector to the control unit in case of an alarm from reaching it, thus causing the control unit to interpret an alarm situation as being inactive.

For years, single-frequency radio systems were a good alternative for people who wanted a higher level of security in their homes, but in recent years, with the internet boom, obtaining a jammer, which was practically impossible before, is now extremely easy. Portable, battery-powered jammers with 3 watts of power and ranges of between 10 and 20 meters are readily available online for anyone who wants to buy one.

Recommendations on what to consider when choosing a security system:

Currently on the market, there are many security systems with diverse technologies and many security companies with very diverse working philosophies.

When choosing a security company and technology, there are a number of parameters to consider, parameters that we will define through a series of questions that we must ask ourselves and that will help us when making our decision:

What type of system do I need? Do I want to protect my house or do I primarily want to protect my family?

If your goal is to protect your family, you should avoid systems that, regardless of the technology they use, only detect an intruder once they are already inside your home, because by the time the alarm is triggered, you will no longer have time to react. On the other hand, if we detect an intruder outside our house, we can activate deterrents to prevent further intrusion, such as perimeter spotlights, exterior sirens, or the activation of motorized security shutters or grilles.

If the aim is to implement a security system solely to protect material assets:

• Determine the level of security in accordance with the values contained in the site.

• Define the environmental class of the areas to be protected.

• Identify the level of protection based on the values contained and the environmental class.

If, on the other hand, the aim is a system that protects both property and people, we will take special care with single-frequency radio systems. Whenever possible, we will install a wired system, and if that is not possible, there are high-security radio systems on the market that work with up to 4 frequencies (+ info)

Wired or wireless system

A properly installed wired system is the most reliable security system because it is impossible to inhibit and will react by activating the alarm in case of a cable cut or attempted tampering or sabotage of any of the system’s elements.

If, on the other hand, it is not possible to install a wired system, we must be especially careful with the type of radio system to choose, since there are very few manufacturers of this type of system on the market that can guarantee immunity to frequency jammers.

We must rule out any single-frequency radio system that operates at 433 or 868 MHz, since for these frequencies it is extremely easy to find 3W power jammers on the Internet for approximately €100.00.

If a security company assures you that a single-frequency radio security system is immune to jammers, demand a demonstration. High-security radio systems that operate on up to four frequencies are available on the market (more info).

What type of security company do I want for my home?

1. First of all, it is important to keep in mind that your security system information is absolutely confidential, therefore it is important that the installation company does it with its own personnel and not under any circumstances with subcontracted companies.

2. A reputable security company will always conduct a customized preliminary assessment. This assessment will include a protocol for responding to an alarm.

3. The kits are not compatible with professional security systems. Beware of pre-assembled kits; what works for one house may not work for another.

4. Avoid long-term contracts whenever possible.

5. Make sure that the person who advises you and provides the system is also your point of contact for any questions or issues. Having a known contact you can rely on is synonymous with trust.
